Buquê dos ruídos úteis is a work for soprano and electronics that uses Natália Correia’s poem Cidadania (Citizenship). For the title, the composer chose the first verse, rather than the title of the poem, because it better symbolizes the branching textures that emerge in the music. In addition, it also demonstrates the composer’s fascination with the creative combinations of words found in the best authors.
Until the final moments of the compositional process, due to the noisy nature of electronics, the use of phonemes and sounds of undefined pitch by the soprano was always open. However, the patient and immaculate entry of the singing would be destroyed by this desire for exploration. The singable part is dominated by long syllables that merge with consonant microtonal harmonies. The various diphthongs used for timbral exploration (such as EQ filters), as well as the various musical motifs, create relationships between words that are in different parts of the poem. These relationships give rise to new meanings and interpretations that go beyond the consideration given to the poetic structure.
The electronics are mainly composed of granular sounds. The chosen sounds end up musically representing what is being recited (“airplane,” “birds,” “saxophone,” etc.), as if they were madrigals. However, these often lose their original identity, as they vary in grain density and merge with other sounds that were not originally from the same sound family, creating a bouquet of noises that accompanies the retro-futuristic harmonies.
